Floors have carried everything. Tables have been used for meals, craft and quiet activities by a dozen different children. Bathrooms have been used dozens of times. The National Health and Medical Research Council sets the benchmark here. Its guideline Staying healthy: Preventing infectious diseases in early childhood education and care services, now in its sixth edition, is the reference the sector has used for thirty years. It’s clear that routine environmental cleaning should happen daily and again whenever something is visibly soiled, with specific attention to kitchens, toilets and nappy change areas.

Cleaning also sits inside your regulatory obligations. Quality Area 2 of the National Quality Standard covers children’s health and safety, and hygiene practices form part of how a service is assessed. ACECQA publishes the standard nationally; in South Australia, the Education Standards Board is your regulatory authority.

Areas that need the most attention

High-touch surfaces

Door handles, light switches, taps, tables, chairs, toy bins, sleep mats and the low sections of walls and doors that children actually touch. These carry the highest transfer risk in the building and need daily attention rather than periodic.

Bathrooms and nappy change areas

The NHMRC guideline singles these out, and they’re the first place an assessor looks. Nappy change surfaces need cleaning and sanitising after each use by educators, plus a thorough clean at the end of the day. Persistent odour usually isn’t a bathroom problem at all — it’s grout, floor edges and the seals around fixtures, which is where a domestic mop never reaches.

Food preparation and eating areas

Kitchens, servery benches, high chairs, tables and the floor around them. Children eat, drop, and then play on the same floor, so food areas and floor areas aren’t really separate jobs.

Floors and soft surfaces

Most of the day happens at floor level in an early learning centre. Hard floors need proper cleaning rather than a wipe-over, and carpeted areas, sleep mats and soft furnishings need periodic deep cleaning. We handle that through our carpet cleaning service.

Toys and learning equipment

Shared toys move between mouths and hands all day. Hard toys can be washed and sanitised; fabric items need laundering on a schedule. This is usually shared between educators and cleaners, and the split should be written down rather than assumed.

Sleep rooms, staff rooms and reception

Cots and mats, the staff room, and the entrance where every parent and visitor arrives. Reception is the first thing families see and the easiest area to let slide.

What to look for in a childcare cleaner

Choosing a cleaner for a childcare centre isn’t about who can vacuum and wipe tables. It’s about who can be inside your building, near your children, without creating a compliance problem for you.

Working with Children Checks — not just police checks

This is the point most cleaning companies get wrong, so it’s worth being precise.

Since 1 July 2020, a National Police Certificate has not been valid for child-related work in South Australia. Anyone working in a child-related role must hold a valid Working with Children Check issued by the DHS Screening Unit. Checks are valid for five years, portable between organisations, and continuously monitored. Engaging someone in child-related work without a valid check is an offence, with penalties reaching $120,000.

Ask any cleaning provider for WWCC numbers, not police certificates. If they offer you a police check instead, they don’t understand the environment they’re working in — and the exposure sits with your service, not theirs.

Insurance and documentation

Current public liability and workers compensation, an ABN, and named staff you can verify. Ask for the certificate of currency rather than a verbal assurance.

WHS-safe practices

Chemicals stored locked and out of reach, never left on a bench mid-shift. Products used at correct dilution and contact time. Wet floor signage. Equipment stored securely. Safe Work Australia sets out the obligations around hazardous chemicals, and your provider should be able to produce safety data sheets for everything they bring on site.

Do your cleaners have Working with Children Checks? Yes. Every cleaner working in a childcare cleaning center holds a current WWCC issued by the DHS Screening Unit, and we provide the numbers so you can verify them. We also hold current public liability and workers compensation insurance.

When do you clean? After hours, early morning or weekends — whatever suits your center. Most services prefer an evening clean after the last child leaves, but we’ll work to your operating hours.

Do you supply your own products and equipment? Yes, everything. We can use low-toxicity products throughout at no extra charge, which many centers prefer given how much time children spend at floor level.

Who cleans the toys — us or you? Usually a split. Educators handle sanitizing through the day, and we handle the scheduled deep clean. We’ll agree the split in writing at the start so nothing falls between the two.

How do you handle nappy change areas? Cleaned and sanitized as part of every visit, using the approach set out in the NHMRC guideline. Educators clean after each use during the day; we do the thorough end-of-day clean.
